Title:
Japan-ASEAN Comprehensive Economic Partnership: Asian Perspectives.
Significance
of issue:
The Japanese government by Prime Minister Koizumi had announced the
new policy toward ASEAN during his visit to this region in January
2002. This new policy is called An Initiative for the
Comprehensive Economic Partnership. The objective is to create
a community that acts together and advances together. Under
this policy, 2 main issues will be emphasized: the economic
cooperation, and the cooperation for the future (such as education,
human resources development, transnational issues.) This policy has
much impact on not only ASEAN countries, but also Asian region as a
whole. Moreover, among ASEAN countries, they do not have similar
reactions or policies to the Japanese proposal. Therefore, it is
interesting to study this new policy, the impact of it, and the
reactions of Asian countries to this policy individually and as a
whole picture of ASEAN.
Objective:
to provide a forum for an academic discussion about the new policy
of Japan, particularly the views form Asian countries, including
Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam,
PRC and South Korea.
